Back to basics: Making glasses the old-fashioned way
In the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, here we are ready to make lenses for our patients at the Kwale Eye Centre. However, disaster struck! The old optical glazing machine finally conked out. So back to the old school method we went and painstakingly hand traced and cut each individual former lens from thick plastic sheets and then cutting the lens to the exact size of the frame on an antique lens grinding machine.
Fred to the rescue, meet our Optical Manager. Here he is checking and rechecking to the millimetre each lens will fit in the patient’s frame.
And here I am on the groover for the final touches so the lens will be firmly in place in the frame. Job done. It takes forever so we have since started a fundraising campaign to raise crucial money for a new speedy automatic glazing wheel.
